Class 47

about

My original list of possible tracks for this album had a long tune based on a field recording of my commute on the Adelaide Metro from when I worked in South Australia for a while. I wasn’t comfortable with how it sat in the track listing, so pulled it (I have a thought of doing an ep based on my time in Adelaide using more field recordings that I took - so many ideas, so little time!!).
But I liked the idea of having a train song.

I was browsing old snippets and loops and I came across one with the arpeggiated baseline and modular rhythm you can hear in the finished song. Because I has trains in my head, this jumped out at me - and the other bits accreted around it over the course of one weekend - this came together quite quickly.

One of the very few times where I’ve aimed for a feeling/theme and hit it full on. Blue and yellow diesel engines passing along the tracks at the top of the school field. Sitting dozing in a carriage as a teen on my way to Lincoln. Dabbling with train spotting.

The later lead lines in this were a deliberate play on train horns. And there’s a little train related aural easter egg that pops up a couple of times…
