The Echoing Green

about

The Echoing Green is a poem by William Blake. I love a bit of William Blake. The music for this came as I was trying to write more pastoral pieces as per Frazer’s original thoughts of something Werra Foxma might like to hear. Some typical gribbly noodling around on an electric piano gave me pretty much the core of the song you can hear as it’s set up at the start. A bit of dusky flute, and we were good to go. It was a nice tune, but needed something else.

I was browsing the Internet Archive as I do now and again - just mooching about seeing if I could find anything old worth sampling. And I came across some poetry readings. One of which was The Echoing Green - which I’ve always liked as a touching study of ageing, shot though with a bucolic view of village England. But it was read by someone with an American accent - and while the reading was nice, it didn’t sit well in the tune or in my head.

So I got my Mum to read it - and that’s who you can hear on the finished track. And I love it.

Anoraks note: I can hear a Tubeway Army influence in this one. Yes, really. Bonus points for naming the song…
